My two-year-old recently reintroduced me to the movie Frozen. I loved it all, from the animation to the storyline to the music. As the Oscar-winning theme song replayed in my head, it got me thinking. It makes sense why so many continue to sing Elsa’s tune years after the movie’s release.
Except life isn’t a Disney movie, although it’s a nice thought. Balancing what we hide and what we reveal serves its purpose. Finding ways to balance honesty AND kindness isn’t always easy, but it’s possible.
We may not have supernatural powers like Elsa, but we can still freeze hearts. We might not build a hideaway-ice-castle in the mountains with our hands, but we can turn cold and shut people out. For sure, we can unleash an emotional avalanche and take those we love down with us.
If you know this, how can you change it?
It’s less about hiding your faults and more about loving the REAL person you are inside. Celebrating your weaknesses as much as your strengths. Saying you are sorry. Committing to doing better next time. Being kind. Loving the people in your life, not only when it’s easy but also exceptionally hard. Admitting you’ll make mistakes, you’ll fail, and you WILL let others down. And, all of that’s okay because, above all, YOU ARE HUMAN.
Embrace yourself FIRST, flaws and all.
So as Elsa sings, “Let it Go,” in my head, I feel closer to the movie’s message: LET GO of whatever holds you back from being your authentic self and balance it with LOVE. Speak your mind respectfully. Dig deep to find the right words, not the perfect words, because perfect is an illusion.
You have one life to love, and be loved, do it YOUR way.
I, for one, have a long way to go. But when a Disney character like Elsa makes it seems so easy, I can’t help but wonder if maybe she’s right.
