Every new year brings on a world of possibilities. A refresher in our lives asking us to pivot, make those changes we let go of the prior year. We make resolutions. Our dreams get more significant. Our to-do lists, longer. Our goals, more.
We pile on the expectations thinking we have all year, so they’re doable. Yet we don’t take into account the most essential part of all: LIFE. Life happens. Yes, it gets in the way, but it also IS the way.
I’ve always prided myself on being a driven person. I’m goal-oriented but also results-oriented. I want to see the fruits of my labor. I love being an author because when my job is complete, I can hold a BOOK in my hands, a physical product of my work. It’s beyond rewarding.
What isn’t rewarding is never completing a goal, which is also one of my specialties. It happens because I always have TOO MANY goals. Worse, I don’t have the restraint to stop making them. I’m addicted to wanting to accomplish things. With little to no free time (now more than ever with a little one), many of my new goals fall to the wayside for more significant priorities and never get accomplished. That’s why setting too many goals is a habit I intend to break in 2021.
My ONE goal for 2021 is simple: LESS. Less stuff. Less surplus. Less stress. Not only does it effectively break my bad-goal-setting-habit, but it puts me on the path to a minimalistic life.
Simple. Spacious. Serene.
Last year was a doozy, and we’re still reeling. Even if you’re not a resolution-making or goal-driven person, I’m sure there are things you want to do this year. My hope is that whatever you aspire to accomplish in 2021 adds value to your life and brings you joy. I also hope you don’t put too much pressure on yourself. And you forgive yourself if you let it go in exchange for living your life.
Because that’s what it’s all about…living our lives. Goals are great, but they aren’t everything. If you do just ONE thing this year that sparks happiness for you in some way, you have done plenty.
Here’s to 2021, may it be everything you want it to be. More importantly, everything you need it to be.
